The Engineering Corps of the Indian Army will help in the manual drilling work inside the Silkyara Tunnel. On Sunday morning, a contingent of the Army’s engineering regiment Madras Engineer Group (MEG) has reached Silkyara, which will take up the responsibility of manual drilling here. Actually, drilling work was being done with auger machine to save 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel. After drilling for about 47 meters, 800 mm pipes were inserted in the debris, but on Friday evening, the blades of the auger machine got stuck in the bars and broke, after which the drilling work with the machine has come to a standstill.
At the same time, cutting work is going on with laser, plasma and gas cutter to take out the stuck auger. After taking out the auger, manual drilling will be done. For this, a contingent of Madras Engineer Group of the Indian Army has been specially called.
An engineering regiment in the Indian Army
According to sources, this contingent includes 30 soldiers and officers. Who have expertise in technology. All of them will help in manual drilling work. With this, the work of preparing an escape passage through 800 mm pipes for the workers trapped inside the tunnel can be completed. Colonel Deepak Patil, in-charge of relief and rescue operations, says that it would be great if the Indian Army helps in the manual drilling work.

Madras Engineer Group is also known as Madras Sappers. It is an engineering regiment in the Indian Army. Which helps in construction of bridges for infantry, helipads, temporary bridges on rivers etc.
