The government has started preparations for municipal elections in Uttarakhand. In this context, a single dedicated Verma Commission has been requested to provide the report before January 27 regarding the status of OBC (Other Backward Class) in the municipal body areas. On the basis of this, reservation for OBCs in civic bodies is to be decided. On the other hand, the dedicated commission has finalized the reports of 95 municipal bodies. The commission will submit its report to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on January 25. It is believed that after this, OBC reservation in civic bodies will be decided next month.
Municipal bodies are handed over to administrators
After the five-year tenure of 100 municipal bodies in the state ended on December 2 last year, they were handed over to the administrators. Due to the elections of two civic bodies, Roorkee and Bajpur, being held later, his tenure is to end in March-April this year. Meanwhile, the matter of municipal elections not being held on time reached the High Court. The court has ordered to hold elections within six months. In view of this, the government has become active.
Report has been sought from the commission
In the same sequence, in view of the actual situation of OBCs in civic areas as per the orders of the Supreme Court, the government has requested the single-member dedicated commission constituted under the chairmanship of retired Nainital High Court judge BS Verma to provide a report in this regard. In fact, the posts to be reserved for OBCs in municipal elections are to be determined on the basis of the report of the Commission.
Report will be submitted to CM tomorrow
The Commission has prepared reports for 95 out of total 102 municipal bodies. Actually, elections are not held in three civic bodies Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri, whereas the delimitation of Kirtinagar, Narendra Nagar, Rudprayag and Herbertpur has not been finalized yet. The report of 95 bodies will be submitted to the Chief Minister on January 25 by the Commission. As soon as the process of delimitation of the remaining four bodies is completed, a report on the actual status of OBCs will be submitted in these also. Manoj Tiwari, Deputy Director of Panchayati Raj Department, who is looking after the responsibility of Member Secretary of the Commission, confirmed this.
