There has been an increase in the activism regarding the Uniform Civil Code in the state. Meetings of the Expert Committee are on in New Delhi to finalize the draft Uniform Civil Code.
It is believed that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami may hold a meeting with the expert committee and discuss this issue during his stay in Delhi.
Implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the state is one of the top priority of the government. After coming to power, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami constituted an expert committee under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (Seni) on 27 May 2022, in which four members were included, to draft the Uniform Civil Code.
Later, the member secretary was also included in it. The tenure of this committee was extended twice. In May this year, its tenure was extended for four months. During the 13-month tenure of the expert committee, 63 meetings have been held so far and more than 2.30 lakh suggestions have been received by the committee.
During its tenure, the committee met the representatives of different religions, communities and tribes and also took suggestions from the local people by going to different parts of the state. The committee has taken suggestions in this regard from the migrant Uttarakhandis as well as from various political parties.
The committee was earlier supposed to hand over the draft of the code to the government by the end of June, but so far it has not happened. During his visit to New Delhi on July 23, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had a long meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on this subject.
The chairman and members of the committee were also present in this meeting. After the discussion held in this meeting, the committee is going to finalize the draft. It is believed that on Monday, apart from the central leadership, the Chief Minister can also hold a meeting with the expert committee on this subject.
