
The Supreme Court has sentenced Bihar politician Prabhunath Singh to life imprisonment. The court has given this punishment in a case related to the 1995 double murder. Prabhunath Singh is a former MP. A case of murder was registered against Prabhunath in 1995. The Supreme Court’s decision on the same case came today and the former MP was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Supreme Court overturned the order of Patna High Court
On August 18, a three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul overturned the orders of the lower court and the Patna High Court.
The lower court and Patna High Court had ordered the acquittal of Prabhunath Singh, but the Supreme Court had convicted Singh. After hearing the arguments on the quantum of punishment, the bench sentenced the convict Prabhunath to life imprisonment.
What is the matter?
The double murder case of Prabhunath Singh pertains to the murder of two persons on the day of polling for the assembly elections (March 1995) at Chhapra in Saran district of Bihar. Prabhunath was said to be the accused for the murder of these people. It was alleged that both the people had not voted for Prabhunath’s candidate, hence they were murdered. The apex court, while convicting Singh, a multiple-time MP from Bihar’s Maharajganj, had said there was not an iota of doubt that Singh had tried everything possible to destroy the evidence against him.
Political journey of Prabhunath Singh
Former MP Prabhunath Singh’s political career started in 1985. Before becoming an MLA, Prabhunath came into the limelight after the murder of Ramdev Singh Kaka, the then MLA of Mashrak. Prabhunath Singh was also accused of murdering Kaka, but he was later acquitted by the court. However, his brother Dina Singh was sentenced.
Prabhunath had lost the election to Ashok Singh
In 1990, Prabhunath Singh won the elections on Janata Dal ticket. In 1995, Janata Dal ticket was given to Ashok Singh in the assembly elections. During this period, Prabhunath contested the elections from Bihar People’s Party (BPPA). Prabhunath lost and Ashok Singh won the election. After this, on July 3, 1995, at 7.20 pm, Ashok Singh was murdered in his residence on Strand Road, Patna. Prabhunath Singh, his brother Dinanath Singh and Ritesh Singh of Mashrak were named accused in the murder.
