Till now the system remained dormant regarding the civic elections in the state, but when the High Court asked questions from the state government about the preparations being made for the civic elections, the system came into action. Exercise to prepare ward wise voter list has started in Dehradun Municipal Corporation. At the corporation level, the voter list will be updated in a total of 671 booths and the final list will be released by February 2. Although there is still little hope of holding civic elections before the Lok Sabha elections, but with the commencement of the exercise regarding election preparations, there is definitely a stir among the political parties.
Tenure is ending on 2nd December
Like other bodies, the tenure of Dehradun Municipal Corporation Board is also ending on December 2. Only one month is left and no preparations have been made yet for the elections. However, in the hearing of an appeal, the High Court asked questions to the state government regarding the civic elections. After which the system came into action.
There is a possibility of holding civic elections
Till now, political parties had also assumed that the Municipal Corporation elections would be held only after the Lok Sabha elections to be held in April. But, with the start of the process of preparing voter list, there is a possibility of holding civic elections in February or March. Municipal Corporation’s Assistant Municipal Commissioner Dayal Singh has been made the nodal officer for the administration from the voter list to the duties of the employees.
Municipal Corporation is busy in preparations
Municipal Corporation officials are busy gathering data on the number of booths in all 100 wards and estimating the population there. Under which a list of 671 booths has been prepared in Dehradun Municipal Corporation area. In which there are five to 14 booths in the wards. Banjarawala, the largest ward in the city, has the maximum number of 14 booths. Now the Municipal Corporation has stated that there is a requirement of 671 employees to appoint one employee for each booth. 100 supervisors of the corporation will also be included in this. After this the enumerators will be sent to the Election Commission through Tehsil.
Voter list of the body is different
The voter list of civic elections is different from that of Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. In such a situation, a separate list has to be prepared every time for the body. Tenants are also involved in this, whereas in other elections only the tenant does not have the right to vote in that area. During the civic elections held in the year 2018, there were about 6.25 lakh voters in the voter list of the corporation. There is a possibility of increase in population in the corporation area by at least 70 thousand to one lakh in the last five years.
