Today is a very special day for the devotees of Bholenath. Devotees have been standing in long queues outside Shivalaya since late night for the Jalabhishek of Mahadev on Mahashivratri. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month. According to Hinduism, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on this day. Shiva is Mahakaal, the time of times, so his worship is not affected by inauspicious times like Bhadra and Panchak. Therefore, despite Bhadra on Mahashivratri, Shiva puja can be performed uninterrupted throughout the day. The word Mahashivratri means the night of Lord Shiva. Maha means great and Shivratri means the night of Lord Shiva.
