All revenue areas of Uttarakhand will come under the purview of civil police, the government is studying the proposal of the headquarters

admin July 22, 2025

The state government is now preparing to remove all the rural areas of Uttarakhand from the revenue police and hand them over to the civil police. For this, the police headquarters has submitted a proposal to the government to bring the remaining four thousand villages under the purview of civil police in the second phase. In this, it is proposed to set up police stations and outposts in terms of population. The Finance Department is studying this proposal. After getting approval from Finance, it will be brought to the cabinet. The revenue police system has been in place in Uttarakhand since the formation of the state. That is, in all the revenue areas, the revenue police was responsible for law and order instead of the civil police. For this, from the Tehsildar to the Patwari, everyone had legal rights like the civil police. After the formation of the state, the form of the revenue areas started changing and these also started turning into urban areas. Along with this, criminal incidents also started increasing here. In such a situation, the demand to bring these areas under the purview of civil police gained momentum and even the court was approached for this. The Nainital High Court in its decision directed the state government to bring all revenue areas under the purview of civil police. In this sequence, in the first phase, the state government took more than 1200 villages of revenue areas under its purview in February 2023 and six police stations and 21 outposts were established here. Now in the second phase, preparations have started to deploy civil police in other revenue villages. Its detailed proposal has been prepared by the Police Headquarters and submitted to the government. Home Secretary Shailesh Bagauli said that the proposal received from the Police Headquarters is being studied.
