All government and commercial vehicles older than 15 years in the state will be taken out of circulation. For this, the Transport Department has set a deadline of January 2025.
If the department is successful in doing so, it will receive a total of Rs 50 crore as special assistance to the states from the Center. Out of this, the state has already received Rs 25 crore on completion of the first phase. The central government has given instructions to take out government and commercial vehicles older than 15 years from circulation in all the states. In this regard, work has also started in Uttarakhand. About seven thousand vehicles in Uttarakhand are coming under this scope.
The Transport Department has so far scrapped about four thousand of these vehicles. Scrap centers have been set up to scrap the vehicles. Along with this, the department has also brought new schemes for scrapping commercial vehicles, in which many types of discounts are being given to everyone to scrap 15 year old vehicles. The central government has planned to give special assistance to motivate the states. In this, the department had to achieve the targets in two phases. In the first phase, the department had to make a plan to scrap vehicles older than 15 years. Along with this, the vehicle owners had to be motivated for this. The state government has completed this phase. In lieu of this, the state government has received an amount of Rs 25 crore. Now in the second phase, the department has to auction all the old vehicles by 31 January 2025 and scrap them. On achieving this target, the department will be given another Rs 25 crore. That is, the department will receive a total of Rs 50 crore on achieving both the phases of the target.
This subject was discussed in a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Radha Raturi recently. Departmental officials said that the process is being taken forward rapidly in this regard. The target will be achieved by the stipulated time.
