
It has been decided to hand over local bodies to administrators in Uttarakhand. Elections will not be held before the tenure of the bodies ends on December 4. The State Election Commission has released a timetable of three months from November 2 to February 2, 2024 for the detailed revision of electoral rolls of the local bodies. The work of detailed revision of electoral rolls for civic elections in the state will start from November 2 next month. The final publication of the voter list will be done on February 2, 2024. State Election Commissioner Chandrashekhar Bhatt on Thursday issued notification of the timetable for preparing electoral rolls of Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats of the state.
The last civic elections were held in the year 2018
The last civic elections in the state were held in the year 2018. Then the nomination process started from 20th October. After voting took place on 18 November, the results were declared on 20 November. The swearing-in and first meeting of the bodies took place on December 2. According to the Body Act, the five-year tenure of the body starts from the first meeting itself. There is also a provision in the Act that elections can be held 15 days before or 15 days after the end of the term.
Number of municipal bodies increased
At present the number of municipal bodies in the state has increased to 110. Of these, seven bodies have been notified some time ago. In such a situation, it is not possible to conduct their elections along with other bodies. Of the remaining 103 bodies, elections are not held in Kedarnath, Badrinath and Gangotri. Due to the elections in Roorkee Municipal Corporation and Bajpur Municipal Council being held later, his tenure is to be completed next year. Apart from this, a stay order has been received from the court regarding the formation of Siraurikala body. That means elections are to be held in 97 bodies.
Voter lists will be revised
According to the State Election Commissioner, a detailed revision of the voter lists of all other bodies except Municipal Council Herbertpur, Narendra Nagar, Rudraprayag and Bajpur and Nagar Panchayats Kirtinagar, Gangotri, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Munsiyari and Nanda Nagar Ghat will be done. The names of all persons who have completed 18 years of age on January 1, 2024, will be included in the voter list.
