Amid the debate in the country over issues like Uniform Civil Code and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Uttarakhand has taken steps towards implementing UCC. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached Delhi as soon as the draft of UCC was received by the expert committee constituted by the Uttarakhand government. Here he rejected the questions raised by the opposition on the proposed law and claimed that this is not a bet for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, but is going to fulfill the promise made to the public in the 2022 assembly elections.
This promise was made in Uttarakhand Assembly elections 2022
While talking to journalists in Uttarakhand Sadan, CM Dhami said that on the basis of the aspiration and instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP had promised in the 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections that UCC will be implemented if the BJP government is formed again. Expressing confidence in this promise, the public chose BJP, hence the state government first started work on this and constituted a five-member expert committee under the chairmanship of retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. He said that there is no need for any person of any caste, religion or class to be afraid of this law.
This is not being prepared to target anyone. Rather it is for the empowerment of all sections of people equally. It can also be understood that 2.33 lakh people of the state have given their opinion for this draft. This population is ten percent of the total families of Uttarakhand. This is a huge public opinion. When Congress opposed this, he said that when the draft has not reached anyone yet, then how do they know what is in it and what is not. Dhami said that he wants it to be implemented in all the states of the country.
