Congress has expressed concern over the very low nominations for Gram Panchayat member posts in Panchayat elections as compared to the posts. State Congress President Karan Mahara said that this shows that there is a lot of indifference among the general public towards the functioning of the government and Panchayat elections. Public’s trust in the Gram Sabhas towards the government has been shaken. He has raised questions on the names of the persons included in the voter list of the Municipal Corporation elections also being in the voter list of Panchayats. He has also demanded cancellation of nomination of such people and preventing them from voting. Congress State President Mahara said in a statement that due to low nominations for Gram Panchayat member posts, many posts may remain vacant. This may create a situation of constitutional crisis and may hinder the formation of Gram Sabhas. This is a serious matter. He alleged that the government appointed administrators in the Panchayats for six months as part of a conspiracy. The objective was to create enough difference between civic elections and panchayat elections so that BJP can influence the three-tier panchayat system through civic voters.
He said that according to the 2019 order of the State Election Commission, if a person registers his name in the Gram Sabha despite his name being in the civic voter list or contests the election without deleting his name, he is declared ineligible. He has also written a letter to the State Election Commissioner demanding immediate implementation of this order.
