The Uttarakhand government has handed Dehradun school teacher Srishti Kandhari’s death case to the CB-CID after calls for a fair probe. The move follows allegations of sustained mental harassment and a case against her husband and in-laws.
The Uttarakhand government has transferred the investigation into the suspicious death of newlywed government school teacher Srishti Kandhari to the CB-CID following demands for a fair and impartial probe.
Devprayag MLA Vinod Kandhari said he met Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and urged him to order a thorough investigation into the case. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the Chief Minister issued written directions to the Home Secretary to hand over the investigation to the CB-CID.
The MLA expressed confidence that the probe would be conducted transparently and said strict legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty. He also appealed to the public not to pay heed to rumours, cooperate with investigating agencies and maintain faith in the judicial process.
Srishti Kandhari, a government school teacher, allegedly died by suicide in Dehradun eight months after her marriage. Before her death, she recorded a video message addressed to her mother, alleging that she had been subjected to months of mental harassment by her husband and in-laws.
In the video, Srishti apologised to her mother and said she could no longer bear the harassment. She alleged that her in-laws constantly taunted her and claimed their attitude towards her would never change.
According to the complaint filed by her mother, Seema Kandhari, Srishti faced continuous mental harassment after her marriage in November 2025. Her family alleged that she was repeatedly labelled “inauspicious” and blamed for misfortunes in the household.
The complaint further alleged that the harassment intensified after her father-in-law suffered a heart attack and worsened following his death three days before the incident, as the family allegedly blamed Srishti for bringing bad luck based on the advice of a priest.
Doiwala Police have registered a case against her husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 80(2) related to dowry death. Investigators are examining the victim’s video message, forensic evidence, the post-mortem report and other material collected during the investigation. The case will now be investigated by the CB-CID.
