The Dhami government is now going to move fast in the direction of implementing Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, which is adjacent to the international borders. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Monday is being linked to this.
According to sources, the Chief Minister apprised the Prime Minister about the progress made so far by the expert committee with a view to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code. It is understood that as soon as the draft is available from the committee, the government can call a special session of the assembly to implement it in the state.
The State’s initiative of Uniform Civil Code can be very important from the point of view of upcoming Lok Sabha and municipal elections proposed in the state this year.
Chief Minister Dhami suddenly left for Delhi on Sunday immediately after attending the core group meeting of the State BJP. On Monday, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was accompanied by members of the expert committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code.
During this, he informed the Prime Minister in detail about the progress made so far regarding the Uniform Civil Code. It is understood that during this period the Chief Minister took guidance from the Prime Minister with a view to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state.
Here, in political circles, this meeting of the Chief Minister is also being linked to the serious churning going on in the BJP regarding the Uniform Civil Code. In fact, Chief Minister Dhami had promised during the assembly elections that after the formation of the BJP government again, it would form an expert committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code in the state. The Chief Minister made this promise only after consulting the top leadership of the party.
The public also reposed faith in it and the BJP came to power in the state for the second time in a row. Chief Minister Dhami also decided to constitute the committee in the very first cabinet meeting of his second term. Then an expert committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (Retd).
The committee has completed its work and is currently engaged in finalizing the draft Uniform Civil Code. Meanwhile, during his visit to Delhi on July 23, the Chief Minister met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and had an in-depth discussion regarding the Uniform Civil Code.
What happened when:
On 27 May 2022, an expert committee was constituted to draft the Uniform Civil Code. During the tenure of 13 months so far, the expert committee held 63 meetings. More than 2.30 lakh suggestions were received by the committee through online, offline and meetings.
