The Indian Medical Association has announced a 24-hour strike in protest against the rape and murder of a female resident doctor in Kolkata. The doctors will be on strike from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday. However, emergency, post-mortem and VIP duty will continue as usual during the strike. But OPD and elective surgeries will not be performed. On the other hand, patients had to face a lot of problems due to the strike by doctors and staff of private and government hospitals in Uttarakhand. Only serious patients and women coming for delivery got treatment. Due to the OPD being shut, patients did not get treatment in either government or private hospitals. The patients’ attendants bought medicines from medical stores by telling the symptoms and fed them to the patients.

Work boycott in Haridwar

Doctors and health workers will protest at the district hospital at 10:30 under the leadership of District President of Provincial Medical Service Association Haridwar Branch, Dr. Yashpal Tomar.
Work boycott in Roorkee
Doctors have boycotted OPD in all private nursing homes and government hospitals in Roorkee. More than two dozen hospitals in the city are locked and a work boycott board is put up outside. Earlier on Friday night, doctors of the city took out a candle march under the banner of IMA. Students also took out a candle march on Friday night in Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee regarding the Kolkata case.
Effect of strike was also seen in Uttarkashi
OPD service is stalled in all CHCs and PHCs including the district hospital in the border district Uttarkashi. Health workers sat on strike in District Hospital Tehri and demanded justice.
Work boycott in protest against Kolkata incident
The union’s provincial president Dr. Manoj Verma and general secretary Dr. Ramesh Kunwar said that the doctors of the country and the state are standing together in protest against this brutal incident and to get justice for their fellow doctor. He said that the mob in Kolkata attacking the peacefully protesting doctors and vandalizing the hospital shows the failure of the state government.
