In Uttarakhand, the mercury is rising rapidly from the mountains to the plains amid bright sunshine. Due to which severe heat is being felt and electricity consumption has also increased significantly. For the first time in April, the daily electricity demand in the state has crossed 49 million units. At the same time, due to low availability, cuts are being made in rural areas and steel furnaces. This electricity consumption is two to three million units more than in April last year. In the coming days, there may be further increase in electricity consumption, which may increase the challenge of the energy corporation.
Daily demand on the verge of touching 50 MU
Due to increasing humidity in Uttarakhand, there has been an increase of about five to six million units (MU) in the electricity demand in the state in a span of one week. Due to this, the daily demand is on the verge of touching the figure of 50 MU. However, there is a very slight difference between electricity availability and demand, but still cuts are being made in steel furnaces and some rural areas. However, there is relief at the moment due to increase in production of hydroelectric projects of the state and additional electricity being received from the center along with the prescribed quota. Due to no crisis in the energy exchange, electricity purchase is also being done easily. Due to this, electricity availability remains close to the demand and only minor cuts are being made. But, it is difficult to say how long this will continue. If the increase in demand continues like this for the next few days, then power cuts in cities cannot be ruled out.
Power consumption reaching peak in April itself
In previous years, the maximum power demand in April has been around 47 MU. But, this time it has reached more than 49 MU. Whereas, there is still a week left for April to end. In such a situation, power consumption can cross 50 MU in early May itself. For the last few years, power demand has been reaching record levels in summer. Last year, the power demand had reached 62 MU in late May and June, which is an all-time record. The demand for electricity is increasing due to the ever-increasing residential colonies, industries and other construction in Doon. Along with this, the demand has also increased due to the increased operation of e-vehicles.
