Retired Brigadier Murder Case: Two More Arrested, One Injured in Police Encounter; Total Arrests Reach Nine

admin April 4, 2026

Dehradun: In a significant development in the high-profile murder case of a retired Army officer, the police have arrested two more accused, taking the total number of arrests to nine. During the operation, one of the suspects sustained a gunshot injury in an encounter with the police.

The case pertains to the tragic death of 75-year-old retired Brigadier Mukesh Kumar Joshi, who was killed in a shocking incident earlier this week. According to police officials, the latest arrests were made following a late-night operation based on specific intelligence inputs.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Parmendra Dobhal stated that on Friday night, authorities received information about the presence of two suspects in Guniyal village. Acting swiftly, a police team conducted a raid in the area. However, upon spotting the police, the accused allegedly opened fire, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.

During the encounter, one of the suspects, identified as Mohammad Kavish, a resident of Khalapar in Muzaffarnagar, was injured after being hit by a bullet. The second accused, Shantanu Tyagi, a resident of Behat in Saharanpur, was apprehended on the spot. The injured suspect was immediately taken into custody and provided medical treatment under police supervision.

Earlier, the police had already arrested seven individuals in connection with the case. With these latest arrests, the total number of accused in custody has risen to nine. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full sequence of events and to identify if any additional individuals were involved.

The incident that led to Brigadier Joshi’s death occurred under tragic and unexpected circumstances. On the day of the incident, Brigadier Joshi had stepped out for his routine morning walk along with his brother-in-law and a companion. The group had barely walked around 200 meters from their residence in the Tulaj Green Society area towards Mussoorie Road when the incident took place.

According to eyewitness accounts and initial investigations, two speeding cars approached from the direction of Mussoorie Road. The occupants of both vehicles were reportedly engaged in a violent confrontation and began firing at each other indiscriminately.

Amid the chaos, a stray bullet struck Brigadier Joshi in the chest. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, the injury proved fatal, and he succumbed shortly thereafter. The incident sent shockwaves across the city, raising serious concerns about public safety and law enforcement.

Police officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring strict action against those responsible. They have also assured the public that all efforts are being made to bring the culprits to justice and to prevent such incidents in the future.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the police continue to interrogate the accused and gather evidence.
