Soon after assuming power after winning the assembly elections, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami constituted an expert committee headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (Seni) to draft the Uniform Civil Code on 27 May 2022, which included four members Went. Later, the member secretary was also included in it. The tenure of this committee was extended twice.
In May this year, its tenure was extended for four months. During the tenure of about 15 months, the expert committee has held 70 meetings so far and more than 2.35 lakh suggestions have been received by the committee. The committee met the representatives of all religions, communities and tribes of the state through meetings and took suggestions from the local residents by visiting different parts of the state.
Even the committee interacted with all the political parties of the state as well as with the migrant Uttarakhand residents in New Delhi on this subject. The committee was supposed to hand over the draft of the Uniform Civil Code by June this year, but it could not happen. Now the committee is preparing the draft and giving it the form of a book.
The Chief Minister has made more than five visits to Delhi in the last two months and has held discussions with the members of his committee in almost every visit. He has also met Home Minister Amit Shah along with the members of the committee. Now the committee can submit the draft to the state government anytime. The implication of the Chief Minister’s statement given to the media on Monday is also being taken out that the government can present the bill related to it in the House during the assembly session to be held from September 5.
