The old and traditional markets in all 13 districts of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand will be developed as heritage streets. They will be revamped to reflect the local Himalayan style. Following the announcement by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Tourism Department is now implementing this plan. In the first phase, one or two markets in each district will be developed, with more to follow. The number of such markets could exceed 50. Implementing agencies have also been designated for this project. This government initiative will not only offer tourists a unique experience, but also create livelihood opportunities for local residents through the sale of local products. The markets of Uttarakhand are known for their distinct character. Whether it’s the Patal Bazaar in Almora, the Mall Road in Pauri, or the Rajaki Bazaar in Narendra Nagar, each has its own history and unique style. However, they have not been immune to the effects of modernization. Keeping this in mind, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had previously announced that all such markets in the state would be developed in the traditional Himalayan style. Now, the Tourism Department has taken steps in this direction by launching the Heritage Street project.
Learn about Tibari and Dandiali styles
The markets included in the Heritage Street project will be developed in the traditional Himalayan style. All shops will have a uniform look and feel. Traditional architectural elements like Tibari and Dandiali styles will also be revived. Furthermore, power lines will be buried underground, and water hydrants will be installed at various locations. Selfie points will also be created. Visitors to these markets will not only learn about Himalayan culture, but also experience something new. Three implementing agencies have been designated for the Heritage Street project. The first phase will have a budget of five crore rupees each. More livelihood opportunities will be created
The Heritage Street will feature a market where local residents can sell handicrafts, handlooms, and other local products. Increased foot traffic from tourists, leading to higher sales of local products, will create new livelihood opportunities for the local community.
