The ongoing tussle over the Mahapanchayat to be held in Uttarkashi does not seem to be stopping at the moment. The petitioner has now moved the Uttarakhand High Court following the Supreme Court’s refusal to entertain a plea to stop the ‘Mahapanchayat’ in Uttarkashi district’s Purola amid communal tension. A petition has been filed on behalf of the petitioner in the Nainital High Court to ban the Mahapanchayat.
Refusing to entertain the plea seeking a stay on the Mahapanchayat scheduled to be held on June 15, the Supreme Court had told the petitioner that it is the responsibility of the state to maintain law and order. Why have you come here, go to the High Court. The High Court is also capable of hearing. After this, the High Court has been moved on behalf of the petitioner.
Let us inform that Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal have called a mahapanchayat to vacate the shops of Muslim traders in Purola of Uttarkashi. However, the district administration has not yet given its permission.
Local people, traders and Hindu organizations have been agitating since May 26 after a Muslim youth was arrested for trying to abduct a minor in Purola area, demanding that Muslims vacate their shops.
