Uttarakhand is the first state
Uttarakhand is the first state to make a Uniform Civil Code law. After getting the approval of the President for this law, the state government constituted a committee under the chairmanship of former Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh in March 2024 to make its rules. This committee has recommended to make all the major arrangements mentioned in the law online in the rules. One of the main arrangements in the rules is to give information about each other’s past to those living together during live-in relationship. However, this information will be given in the presence of both of them only if they have applied for it. Its purpose is to keep transparency in the relationship. There is also a preparation to register the will online. The committee has proposed to make it free, so that more and more people can come forward to get their will done.
To make the system online, the Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA) is preparing a UCC friendly online portal. Along with this, an app is also proposed to be made, which will prove to be very helpful for the general public. To ensure smooth functioning of the system being made online, personnel of the concerned departments like revenue, home and health department will be trained for this. Preparations are also being made for this. Committee Chairman Shatrughan Singh said that the committee’s effort is to prepare the rules and submit it to the government within the next three months. Arrangements have been made to make the provisions in the rules online, so that the general public can benefit from it.
