The strike by drivers in protest against the provision of strict punishment in hit-and-run cases continued to have a widespread impact in Uttarakhand for the second day. In most areas, passengers kept wandering for vehicles. Whereas, the supply of fruits-vegetables, petrol-diesel etc. remained affected. The system went off the rails in many major cities including Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar. On the other hand, despite talks with the government and administration, no solution was found. The government has given instructions to make alternative arrangements in all the districts. Those operating vehicles have been asked to provide security.
Queues of vehicles formed at petrol pumps
Due to the drivers’ strike, the operation of passenger and goods vehicles came to a standstill. Due to which passengers had to face problems, the supply of many goods was also affected. Information about diesel-petrol crisis kept coming from most cities. In such a situation, queues of private vehicles started forming at petrol pumps since morning. Due to non-availability of supply of fruits and vegetables, prices increased. Meanwhile, there was some relief due to the operation of some buses of the Transport Corporation, but still a large number of passengers have to return empty handed.
Even LPG could not be supplied
Only a dozen contracted buses could be sent from Haldwani and Rudrapur to Pahar and other cities after around 5 pm. LPG could not be supplied in Roorkee due to the drivers’ strike. About four thousand consumers kept waiting for the cylinder to arrive at their homes the whole day. In Haridwar district, the supply of diesel and petrol was completely stopped at all the petrol pumps from the city to the rural areas.
