
Under the slogan of ‘Vocal for Local’, the government has stepped up efforts to give global recognition to local products. In this sequence, the process of getting GI (Geographical Indication) tag to 18 products of Uttarakhand has now reached the final stage. In view of the veracity of the applications made by the state in this regard, Controller General (Patents, Designs and Trademarks) of the Central Industry Promotion and Internal Trade Department, Prof. Unnat P Pandit and other officers will hold hearings at various places in the state on May 11 and 12.
These products can get GI tag:
13 agricultural products Uttarakhand Red Rice, Berinag Tea, Gahath, Manduwa, Jhangora, Burans Sarbat, Kala Bhatt, Chaulai (Ramadana), Pahadi Toor Dal and Malta, Almora Lakhori Chilli, Ramnagar-Nainital Litchi, Ramgarh-Nainital Peach Apart from this, applied to the Union Ministry for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade for obtaining GI tag on five handicraft products. These applications were thoroughly scrutinized at the center level.
According to Agriculture Minister Ganesh Joshi, now in view of the veracity of the applications, a team of officers and experts of the Central Ministry will hold hearings in Tehri, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Almora and Nainital on May 11 and 12. Farmers related to the products will also be present in this. He hoped that soon these products would get GI tag. With this, the number of GI tagged products in the state will increase to 26.
Controller General Prof. Pandit met Agriculture Minister Joshi:
Controller General (Patents, Designs and Trademarks) of the Central Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, who came on a tour of Uttarakhand, Prof. Unnat P Pandit and his team met Agriculture Minister Ganesh Joshi in Dehradun on Wednesday. On this occasion, Minister Joshi discussed the action plan to promote the production of Srianna in the state and the steps being taken with the aim of giving a new identity to agricultural products.
Controller General Prof. Pandit thanked the Agriculture Minister for speeding up the process of formation of GI Board in Uttarakhand and said that Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to form this board. He suggested not to send planting material and seeds of Berinag tea. Along with this, the Organic Products Council was suggested to make such a cake or bar of millet in collaboration with DRDO, which would be useful for the soldiers as well as pregnant women on the border.
