Uttarakhand government is soon going to make the facilities and rehabilitation of prisoners in jails its model prison and penal. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who recently visited Uttarakhand, had obtained information regarding its progress from the state government. Following the instructions of the Home Minister, the Home Department has now started working on this. In this, the focus will be on health services, reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners, especially women prisoners.
This model was made this year
The Central Government has made the Model Prison Act this year. In this Act, arrangements have been made in jails like security assessment of prisoners, redressal of complaints, change in behavior towards prisoners and provision of separate accommodation and rehabilitation for women prisoners and transgenders. In this Act, emphasis has been laid on providing skill development training to the prisoners for their rehabilitation after serving their sentence.
Central government gave instructions to all the states to prepare the Act
The Central Government has instructed all the states to prepare Model Prison and Correctional Act according to their circumstances. Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had held a meeting of the Prison Department in Dehradun. In this meeting, he had expressed concern over the number of prisoners exceeding the capacity in the jails of the state. Besides, guidelines were also issued regarding increasing health facilities for them.
The Act will be finalized under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister
After this meeting, the Home Department has now started working rapidly in this direction. Under this, the government has sought information about the number of prisoners in all the jails, residential conditions, health facilities and the schemes being run in relation to the service schemes. Besides, this new Act of the Center is also being studied in the government.
It is believed that soon a detailed meeting will be organized in this regard under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, in which the Act will be finalized.
