The first day of the year 2024 was a tough one for the passengers traveling in Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses. Roadways buses remained jammed due to boycott of work by drivers and operators of Uttarakhand State Transport Corporation in protest against the provision of punishment and fine to the driver for the accident. Due to not a single bus running on local routes including Delhi, passengers going from Rishikesh to Dehradun and Haridwar were forced to wander with heavy luggage.
Every day, 36 buses operate from Rishikesh depot on Delhi route, eight buses on Doon Road, more than a dozen buses on Haridwar etc. routes. Roadways drivers and operators are recently opposing the provision of giving strict punishment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh to the driver if a person dies in a road accident. Roadways workers have termed it a black law. Passengers wandering in bus stands waiting for buses were forced to take the help of private vehicles to reach their destination, which was heavy on their pockets.
Rishikesh Road Depot Superintendent Anurag Purohit said that two buses of the mountain route left on time on Monday morning. After that, gram flour could not be operated on any route.
