Urban Development Minister Premchand Aggarwal has put an end to the discussion of postponing the elections of the proposed municipal bodies in Uttarakhand in October-November. He said that neither such discussion has taken place nor any decision has been taken at the level of government and administration. He said that the preparations for the civic elections are going on and the government has enough time for this.
The civic elections in the state were last held in October 2018, when there were 90 civic bodies. Presently the number of municipal bodies in the state is 102. Out of these, elections are not held in Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri, whereas due to the later elections in Roorkee and Bajpur, their tenure is to be completed next year.
In view of all this, the exercise is going on for the election of 97 municipal bodies. Other works including ward delimitation are almost in the final stage, while the OBC survey is also nearing completion. Along with this, there are also proposals to expand the boundaries of some municipal bodies, for which exercise is going on.
Meanwhile, there was discussion in the internet media that the government body is preparing to shift the elections further. The reason behind this was the Lok Sabha elections to be held next year. There were many speculations about this. Now Urban Development Minister Premchand Aggarwal has put an end to this.
Six new bodies may be formed:
The government has also received proposals for six municipal bodies from different districts. Brainstorming is going on and it is possible that a decision can be taken in the upcoming cabinet meeting. Even if the green signal is received from the cabinet, then it will take time from their delimitation to other processes. In such a situation, their elections can be held later.
