President Draupadi Murmu while saluting Devbhoomi Uttarakhand said that he is very happy to participate in the convocation ceremony of Doon University today. Congratulating the students who received degrees and medals, he said that the memory of this day will remain one of the most memorable experiences in the life journey of these students. Today a dream of these students is coming true. He expressed hope that this University would make a mark for itself as an excellent institution on various parameters of education. The President said that the progress of any country depends on the quality of its human resource. The quality of human resource depends on the quality of education. Today’s youth is tomorrow’s future, adopting this motto, Doon University has to work towards creating quality human resources not only at the state level but also at the national level.
The President said that Doon University is determined to provide skills to the youth to make them capable. The university is also studying and teaching five foreign languages and three local languages. Encouraging local languages by the university is a commendable effort to preserve our folk culture. Our folk languages are the intangible heritage of our culture. The University has implemented the National Education Policy 2020 from the current session. This is a useful step towards achieving the national goal of making India a knowledge super power. He said that we are celebrating the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence on completion of 75 years of independence. Our national goal is to include the country in the category of developed nations in the next twenty five years. To achieve this goal, the cooperation of youth power will be more important.
President Draupadi Murmu said that a ‘Centre for Public Policy Chair’ has been established in the university, dedicated to policy-making and capacity development for the development of the state. Dr. Nityananda Himalayan Research and Studies Center has also been established, in which research and study will be encouraged in various subjects related to the geographical, ecological, economic and social development of the state. There are many national level institutions in Uttarakhand, Indian Military Academy, Indian Wildlife Institute, Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy, Forest Research Institute, Indian Petroleum Research Institute and Govind Ballabh Pant Agricultural University, which have special recognition at national and international level. He hoped that Doon Vishwavidyalaya would also attain fame like these institutions. The President said that education is the only medium that can bring change in the entire nation. Research and innovation should be encouraged in educational institutions so that students are more equipped with technical skills and provide employment to others instead of seeking employment themselves. Demographic information of the state will be easily available from the data center established to promote demographic research in the university, and demographic research will be encouraged.
The President said that our daughters are achieving success in all walks of life. A concrete example of this was seen in today’s convocation ceremony, out of 36 gold medals, 24 have been received by girl students, while out of sixteen research scholars, eight daughters have been awarded PhD degrees. This proves that there are enough opportunities for education for women in the institute and the institute is committed to encourage them. To specifically promote technical education in the university, three technical schools—the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Design and the School of Environment and Natural Resources—are functioning. He said that when our daughters excel more in subjects like Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, then women empowerment will get more thrust. Today, after receiving degrees and medals, the responsibility of these students has increased further. He said that in whatever field these students go, they should do that work very sincerely and in the best way, only then the education will be effective and meaningful.
